Upper Bay Adoption and Counseling Services Celebrates National Adoption
Awareness Month
National Adoption Month is a time to celebrate
family. It is a time to increase awareness that there are hundreds of
thousands of children in foster homes awaiting adoption. States,
communities, and agencies hold events during this month to bring the need
for families into public view.
Each year, November is recognized as National
Adoption Awareness Month. While all adoption-related issues are important,
the particular focus of November, 2006 was the adoption of children currently in
foster care.
In Delaware, two events celebrated both adoption and
adoptive families.
The 2nd Annual Celebrate Adoption - Honoring Commitment to
Children: An Evening for Parents on Saturday, November 4. This event
took place at the Aldersgate
Methodist Church on Concord Pike in Wilmington. There
was a silent auction, a buffet dinner and a presentation by Regina Kupecky,
LSW, MAT. Ms. Kupecky is an internationally known speaker, author, and
therapist, who has worked in adoption for over thirty years. She
presented: “Positive Parenting: Parenting with Humor and Hope.”
Also an “Adoption Celebration” was held at the
Milford Public Library on November 18. There were
be activities for the children, a potluck lunch, and information available on local adoption agencies.
Also this included a live radio broadcast from Eagle 97.7.
The “Adoption Proclamation” was read at both
events.
The events were co-sponsored by Adoptive Families with
Information & Support (AFIS), the State of Delaware’s Adoption Program, and local
adoption agencies.
